What is CAPOW?

CAPOW! (Citizens Act to Protect Our Water) is taking action to protect Chicago area water quality and public ownership. We are a non-partisan grassroots organization.

Clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right (the UN is telling us what we already know).

Everyone is encouraged to inform local public officials of issues affecting water quality, water ownership and water usage. Ask tough questions and be persistent. You can learn more about these issues on our Resources page.

Because privatization of water systems in the US has consistently increased water rates and decreased water quality, we oppose privatization of our water systems. This includes selling, leasing, subcontracting or otherwise giving control of Chicago’s water to private interests. We support binding legislation protecting public ownership of Chicago’s water.

We support creative and innovative public policies that address long term water needs for the Chicago Water System and protect the Great Lakes.
